Expressing regret at Lankan President Gotabaya Rajapaksa’s statement that devolving powers to Eelam Tamils was not his priority, Stalin said that he was also shocked by the Lankan President expressing inability to devolve powers to the Eelam Tamils against the wishes of majority Sinhalese.

It was sad to note that Lankan President, who said that he treats all people of Sri Lankan equally, has made such a statement after meeting Indian Prime Minister in New Delhi, the DMKpresident said.

The discriminatory “majority-minority” statement could only be construed as a symptom of the opinion which has influenced him and not cherishing democracy, he added, before asking Prime Minister Modi to immediately intervene and make efforts for Eelam Tamils to lead a dignified life with self-respect.

‘Combat flooding on war footing’

Earlier, in another statement, Stalin asked the district administration to act on a war footing to manage the heavy downpour across the state. Claiming that waterlogging on the streets have flooded houses and snapped wires have caused power outage in flooded areas, Stalin said that waterlogging could contributed to mosquito breeding and increase in spread of dengue. Advising the state government and government officials to take preventive measures, Stalin who is also the Leader of Opposition asked the administration to immediately begin relief measures.
