Chair after MS, 9 leading women to be set up in University
Carnatic legend late M S Subbulakshmi has been listed among the 10 outstanding and eminent women from various fields in whose names chairs will be established in top universities coming under the University Grants Commission (UGC) and has invited proposals from institutions in Tamil Nadu.

In its circular to all the State-run universities, including Anna University, the commission said that it would be establishing 10 chairs in different universities in the name of eminent women academicians, administrators, artists, scientists, environmentalists, social reformers among others funded by Ministry of Women and Child Development.
Apart from M S Subbulakshami; mathematician Lilavati; poetry and mysticism Lal Ded; forest and wildlife conservationist Amirta Devi; administrator Devi Ahilya Bai Holkar; expert in medicine and health Anandibai Gopalrao Joshi; academician Hansa Metha; Mahadevi Verma, noted person in literature; scientist Kamala Sohonie and freedom fighter from North East Rani Gaidinliu.
The academic functions of the chair will include contribution to the advancement of knowledge in the area of study and strengthen the role of university in public policy making through research activities.
In addition, short-term capacity-building programmes would also be introduced for teachers in higher education focusing on the designated discipline of the chair.
The chair will also act as a forum for inter-university and inter-collegiate post-graduate and research level dialogues, discussion meetings, seminars, summer and winter schools. Other activities include publishing research articles, reports books and monograms and participating in teaching and Ph D programmes of the department.
The chair will be in one of the departments of the university and will be provided with academic, administrative and logistic support extended to other professors of the department concerned.
The chair will review the progress annually and submit a report on the activities to the UGC. Regarding the aid for the chair, the UGC said 100% funding will be provided for five years and it can be extended for another five years.
