Rs 26 lakh banned products seized by Vellore officials

In a surprise move, district officials acting on the orders of the Vellore Collector, conducted searches on five godowns on Chunnambukara Street and seized banned plastic products and tobacco products worth Rs 26 lakh.

According to Collector A Shanmuga Sundaram, the move was aimed at checking and seizing hoarded onion loads, besides banned plastic products from closed godowns. 

While the action was first initiated by corporation officials, they seized nearly 3 tonnes of banned plastic products from three godowns worth Rs 5 lakh and food security officials seized 1 tonnes of tobacco products worth Rs 15 lakh, from another godown in the same area, said official sources. 

After the inspection by the officers resulted in seizure of many banned products, the Collector was informed and, in his presence, a locked godown was forced open and 5 tonnes of sealed plastic products worth Rs 6 lakh were seized. 

Following the series of seizures, the Collector ordered more inspections in the area to recover the remaining banned products in other locked godowns.
