Two girls sold as bonded labourers, saved

Officials rescued two girls aged around 14 who were reportedly sent to a spinning mill in Coimbatore as bonded labourers for a sum of Rs 20,000 each by their grandmother.

It is said, the Child Line officials at Tiruvarur got a tip off that an aged woman, Vijayalakshmi, had sent her two minor granddaughters to a spinning mill located at Punjaipuliyampatti in Coimbatore through two women agents, Sakuntala and Kanagam, after receiving a payment of Rs 20,000 for each girl.


Acting on the information, the Tiruvarur Child Protection committee lodged a complaint with the police who rused a a team to Coimbatore and rescued the girls, who were brought back to Tiruvarur. A case has been registered against the mill owner and the two women agents. Cops have also launched a hunt to nab all those involved in the deal.
