The agitating doctors, boycotting work, staged the demonstration during which they raised slogans demanding immediate action against the accused.
When contacted on the incident, J Sangumani, the Dean of Madurai GRH, said house surgeon Malathi came under attack by a few attendants of the patient who was admitted in the maternity care ward.
According to sources, a pregnant Muneesvelmani of Othakadai here was admitted to the maternity ward. On Saturday, the patient’s sister, Rajarajeswari, and mother-in-law Murugeswari entered the ward to provide food, with their footwear on. As they did so, the house surgeon is said to have restricted their entry and asked them to remove their footwear. It soon led to a quarrel and in the melee, the patient’s kin allegedly slapped the doctor. The doctor reportedly fainted from the act and was put under treatment in the hospital.
The two women, who allegedly assaulted the doctor, claimed then that they were relatives of Deputy Chief Minister O Panneerselvam. Moreover, they warned the house surgeon of dire consequences if she did not allow them in to the ward, sources said.
The Madurai GRH police filed a case against the women under five Sections of the IPC, and arrested the patient’s sister late in the evening.
