Woman dies in mishap near Tiruchendur

The deceased victim has been identified as Gomathi, resident of Muthu Nagar, Tiruchendur. The accident occurred around 9.30 am when both the victims were walking down the road.

An unidentified vehicle hit them and sped away. While Gomathi succumbed to injuries on the spot, Jayalakshmi (36), who accompanied her, was hurt. Subsequently, the injured victim was taken to hospital in Tiruchendur.

Investigations revealed that the accident was captured on a CCTV camera that showed a mini load van hitting those women and speeding away instantly. The police are reviewing the CCTV to nab the accused. Based on a complaint lodged by Jayalakshmi, the injured victim, Tiruchendur Taluk police have filed a case.

However, relatives of the deceased victim staged road blockade at Tiruchendur central near bus stand demanding immediate arrest of the van driver. Vehicular traffic was affected for over an hour. Later, the police personnel pacified the crowd that the accused would soon be nabbed. After being convinced, the crowd dispersed, sources said.
