Dhanushkodi, the ‘lost land’ with breathtaking views of sea

To reach the place, you have to cross over to the Pamban Island from the mainland by train. During the British Raj, this small town served as an important port for both traders and pilgrims. The cyclone that happened in 1964 destroyed everything and what remains now is a shoreline with ruins that dates back to those days. Nevertheless, this town has become a regular tourist spot because of the coastal charm and mysteries attached to the place.

Places to visit in and near Dhanushkodi: Church and station ruin: Before the cyclone hit in 1964, there was a railway station and church close to the shore. Archeology enthusiasts visit the place to view the fascinating remnants.

Adam’s Bridge: Also known as Rama’s Bridge or Rama Setu, this bridge is a chain of limestone shoals, between Pamban Island and Mannar Island, off the north-western coast of Sri Lanka. This bridge has a lot of controversies associated with its origin and structure. The place offers a blissful experience for the travellers.  

Gulf of Mannar Marine National Park:  It is a group of 21 small and breathtakingly beautiful islands, along with some adjacent coral reefs and shallow water habitats that are located in the Gulf of Mannar in the Indian Ocean. Public access and participation inside the park are limited to glass-bottom boat rides.

Pamban Island: Also known as Rameswaram Island, this island is a nature lover’s paradise. The principal town on the island is the pilgrimage centre of Rameswaram. The island is separated from the mainland by the Pamban channel. 

Thousands of pilgrims from all over the world visit the place where Lord Ram had built the bridge to Sri Lanka to save the goddess, Sita.

Ramar Patham Temple:  Situated about 20 km away from Dhanushkodi, the hill-top temple is believed to have footprints of Lord Ram Himself, on a stone. It is believed that it is at this place, Lord Hanuman told Lord Ram that he had found goddess Sita in Sri Lanka.
