Drawing teacher’s crib focuses on social evils

While several houses are decked with cribs and illuminated colourfully, heralding Christmas, the festival marking the birth of Jesus Christ, this crib, set up at a drawing master’s house in Thoothukudi, a coastal town in the southern region of Tamil Nadu, appeals to all people.

Apart from the nativity scene of Jesus Christ, the crib this year highlights the issue of the Centre’s new Citizenship Amendment Act, which has been sparking protests across the country in recent days. Several images, including Pope Francis, the head of the Roman Catholic Church; and Mother Teresa, the Roman Catholic nun and missionary, are included at the centre of the crib titled ‘Journey of Peace’ in different hues.

Further, the crib also focuses on crimes against women, who were often subjected to harassment and became victims.

The theme-based Christmas crib highlights the humanitarian service that benefitted the community. Scores of people took a glance at the well-decked crib, sources said.

According to N. Isidor Fernando, drawing teacher at St. Lasalle Higher Secondary School, Thoothukudi, who designed the crib, said these images were portrayed to create an awareness about issues being faced in the society and more importantly to take stern action to end such issues with proper solution.

The 56-year old Fernando told DT Next on Sunday that a total of 2,000 sketches were used to create the crib. It was his 19th consecutive year in the creation of crib in his house.
