“After a survey, we came to know about the presence of carcinogen and other toxic substances in samples taken from various states including Tamil Nadu. So, we have a fixed deadline for the milk units to establish a self-monitoring system. We have also asked them to maintain a record of milk samples tested, which will be checked by the officials,” said A Ramakrishnan, the Designated Officer.

“We will check microbiological contaminants, chemicals, and adulterants in the milk products. The reason for this initiative is to ensure the quality of milk. Tests for the presence of pesticides and chemicals must be conducted once in every three months,” he added.

The official said that in case any non-compliance found in the milk samples, it should be reprocessed, and the test should be taken again. If any non-compliance on certain parameters due to the presence of adulterants and chemicals, the wholebatch of milk would be rejected.

“Soon we will launch a scheme to certify milk vendors. The certificate will be given for dairy farmers who maintain hygiene. Those vendors who sell in loose will be covered under this scheme. Even farmers can volunteer by registering through the portal along with their photo identity card,” Ramakrishnan said.
