Stir against Citizenship Act, NRC will regain pace after polls, vows Stalin

DMK president MK Stalin on Thursday assured that his party-led Opposition would organise the largest ever protest opposing the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and National Register of Citizens (NRC) after the local body elections.

Participating in the 95th birthday celebration of Communist veteran R Nallakannu in Chennai, Stalin assured that they would organise the kind of protest never seen not only in Tamil Nadu, but also the whole of India after consulting all sections, beyond political affiliation, the same way they did on December 23 after consulting the leaders of the secular progressive alliance.

Stalin had even invited Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM) founder and actor Kamal Haasan for last week’s protest. However, the actor and his party had stayed away from the protest.

Stalin’s announcement comes in the backdrop of request from several district secretaries, mostly from the districts held up in civic poll preparation, to organise a series of offensives against the BJP regime’s CAA to connect better with the people post-polls.

Though the DMK-led Opposition had put up a decent show a few days ago, the turn out was relatively low even by the standards of the DMK, which is known for its pomp in organising political events.

Inquiries revealed that Stalin had instructed the secretaries of poll bound districts to stay put in their home turf to manage the poll works. Pricked by the belligerence of his ‘friends’ in other opposition ruled states, Stalin has planned a grand show, which would most likely happen after the two-stage local body elections.

Meanwhile, Stalin took to social media to express his apprehension about the National Population Register. “NPR and NRC are two sides of the same coin. Under the #CAA2019, as amended, there is a concern that NPR will create an ecosystem that will discriminate against all religions. The Central government must explain what is the need to spend INR 4,000 crore on NPR now? #NPRisNRC,” Stalin tweeted.
