On October 2, gold, diamond and platinum jewellery worth Rs 13 crore went missing from a popular jewellery store. On the same night, E Manikandan of Tiruvarur and Kanagavalli were arrested during vehicle inspection.  One of the prime accused Suresh, surrendered at Chengam court and later Murugan surrendered before the City Civil Court in Bangaluru. Later, Murugan was transferred to TN. His interrogation revealed many details, most importantly how he managed to evade arrest despite there being several cases against him, thanks to his close ties with police.

Murugan further confessed that soon after the PNB robbery, the gang had stolen jewels from a house in Anna Nagar and the police had zeroed in on him as the culprit. He had met the police through his ‘sources’ and handed over Rs 10 lakh to them to avoid arrest. There were three cops, including inspector Krishnamurthy, who received the sum. This was the money stolen from the bank. After the jewellery heist, the gang had reportedly sold 4.5 kg gold and had handed over another Rs 10 lakh to the police through an inspector very close to Murugan. He handed over the cash near a Coffee shop near Chennai. He had also asked the Tiruchy police to verify the CCTV footage and said that the particular car is still stationed at the same spot.

Tiruchy police summoned Krishnamurthy and head cop Joseph to be present before January 3.
