Prime accused Tamil alias Sargunam was picked up by special teams of the police from Rampura village in Mysore on Monday night. The police said Roobini (30) from Velliangadu in Mettupalayam killed her daughter with the help of her illicit partner by feeding the child poison-laced biscuits on May 27.
However, she then cooked up a story, claiming ignorance on the whereabouts of her little daughter. The police then retrieved the body of Devi Sri from a nearby bush the next day. Inquiries by the police revealed that Roobini got separated from her husband Balraj, a daily wager, over some family issues and was living with her child.
The police said Sargunam (36) from Kovilpalayam, who was into supplying manpower for film shoots, started a relationship with Roobini. On the fateful day, both had visited a temple at Karattumedu in Saravanampatty, where they hatched a plan to kill the child as they found her as a disturbance in continuing their affair.
After poisoning the girl, Sargunam had forced a kerchief into her mouth to prevent the victim from crying. He then dumped the body of the girl in a bush and went into hiding. However, the police arrested Roobini. But, a search was on for the last seven months by two special teams of the police to nab her paramour.
Acting on a tip-off, the police picked up Sargunam from Rampura and are bringing him to Coimbatore to carry out further investigations.
