It may be recalled that the Tamil Nadu government issued the order for the creation of the new taluks on December 31 which was immediately forwarded to District Collector Divyadarshini and Commissioner of Revenue Administration J Radhakrishnan. Based on it, the new taluk offices were inaugurated on Thursday.

While Sholinghur was formed by rearranging the existing Wallajahpet, Arakkonam and Nemili taluks, the Kalavai taluk was carved out of the present Arcot taluk.

While Sholinghur taluk would include the sub taluks of Sholinghur, Velam and Banavaram, the new Kalavai taluk would have Kalavai and Mambakkam sub taluks.

Collector Divyadarshini lit the traditional lamp to inaugurate the Sholinghur taluk office in the former town panchayat office. The Kalavai taluk office would meanwhile function from an old community hall in Kalavai town, sources said.

While Sholinghur taluk would have a population of nearly 1.61 lakh spread over 288 square kilometres and housed in 49 revenue villages that also include 47 village panchayats, the Kalavai taluk would include a population of 78,773 spread over 207.267 square kilometres and housed in 50 revenue villages which also include 37 village panchayats.

While local AIADMK functionary and State Commercial Taxes Minister KC Veeramani was conspicuous by his absence, those present at the event included MLAs S Ravi (Arakkonam) and G Sampath (Sholingur), Rajya Sabha MP Mohammedjan, Ranipet DRO M Jayachandran and Sub Collector Ilambagavath.
