The FIR was filed against the legislator on the direction from a local court. Selvamuthurayan, general secretary of the Puducherry Combatant Movement, had approached the Principal Judicial Court here on October 1 last that Kumar failed to show his property worth Rs 4.3 crore at Kumarappalayam in JVR Nagar in the affidavit and thus cheated the government as well as the election department.

Though, this was brought to the notice of the returning officer and demanded the rejection of John Kumar's nomination, the RO initiated no action and accepted his nomination papers. Justice Damaodaran, who dealt with the case, directed the Odeansaalai police to register an FIR. However, the legislator filed a review petition in the Second Additional District Magistrate Court in connection with the order issued by Justice Damodaran. Second Additional District Magistrate Subha Anbumani, who took up the case, dismissed the review petition on December 20.

Following this, Odeansaali police registered an FIR against John Kumar on Friday evening.
