The social media cell of the rural police found Sathyamurthy (25) from Bothampalayam, near Avinashi, in Tirupur district, sharing child sexual content on the social media. The police have begun a crackdown against sharing of child porn on social media in an effort to curb sexual offences against children. The arrest of Sathyamurthy comes a day after the rural police arrested an Assamese native, Renda Basumatary (23), who was working in a tiles store on Pollachi-Palakkad Road, on Saturday evening after he was found sharing child pornographic contents on Facebook.
The police sources said that the social media cell of the Chennai police has shared a list of 40 persons to be viewing child porn. The Coimbatore police were tracking them to pin them down. The police said Sathyamurthy is working as a driver in a private college in Sulur area. “He used to view child porn and also shared them to his friends through Facebook. Also the mobile phone seized from him, had lot of child porn videos and photos. A probe is on to find out the list of persons in his contacts, with whom he shared the objectionable content. More arrests are likely in the coming days,” the police said.
The Sulur police booked him under Sections of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (Pocso) Act and the Information Technology Act. He was produced in court and lodged in Coimbatore Central Prison.
