Amendment bill tabled to enable suspension of co-op societies’ heads

Minister for Cooperation Sellur K Raju on Wednesday introduced an Amendment Bill for Tamil Nadu Co-operative Societies Act of 1983.

According to the new amendment, president or vice president of a registered cooperative society can be suspended in case of any misappropriation or gross mismanagement. “If a complaint or otherwise is brought to the notice of the registrar against the president or vice president for misappropriation or breach of trust or gross mismanagement of the affairs of the cooperative society or committed any offence involving criminal misconduct or moral turpitude and if the registrar has prima facie evidence he can place the president or vice president under suspension for a period not exceeding six months.”

The period of suspension can also be extended by the registrar from time to time for a further period of six months or till final order is passed.
