Sleeping woman murdered by armed gang in Madurai

A 33-year-old woman was allegedly murdered by an armed gang for unknown reasons while she was asleep at her house near Lotus Tank in Madurai city in the early hours of Wednesday.

The victim, identified as Lavanya, wife of Kumaraguru, a shopkeeper at a utensils stall situated at Lakshmipuram, was hacked to death by an armed gang while she was asleep, sources said. Seeniyammal alias Jeyakodi (58), mother-in-law of Lavanya, also came under the attack when she attempted to save Lavanya from the gang.


Based on the information, the Tallakulam police reached the spot and inspected the scene. They immediately rushed the injured Seeniyammal to the hospital where she is currently undergoing treatment, sources said.


According to sources, the police received basic leads based on the CCTV footage retrieved from the neighborhood and the footage showed two persons moving away from the house.


Preliminary investigations also revealed that the murder occurred around 4 am and the gang had sneaked into the house without attempting to gain entry through the main door. The locked and undamaged door was opened only after the gang fled the scene. As part of investigation, fingerprint experts examined the scene of crime and a sniffer dog was also pressed into service. A case has been filed.
