OPS presents Rs 6,580 cr supplementary budget

Deputy Chief Minister O Panneerselvam on Thursday presented the second supplement budget estimates of Rs 6,580 crore for the 2019-2020 fiscal. The State also accorded administrative sanction of Rs 3,266 crore to establish nine new district headquarters hospitals at The Nilgiris, Dindigul, Ramanathapuram, Tiruppur, Virudhunagar, Namakkal, Tiruvallur, Nagapattinam and Krishnagiri.

Administrative sanction for Rs 4,332 crore has also been made to establish two electricity transmission projects under Chennai - Kanniyakumari industrial project. This includes loan assistance from Asian Development Bank and Rs 1,000 crore as sharecapital assistance from TN. A total of Rs 108 crore is included in the supplementary estimates.

“The supplementary estimates are being presented mainly to obtain the approval of the legislature for expenditure on ‘New Service’ and ‘New Instrument of Service’ items, which were sanctioned since the presentation of first supplementary estimates 2019-2020 on July 20, 2019, and to enable recoupment to the contingency fund for advances made from the fund,” Panneerselvam explained at the Assembly. He noted that the government has accorded sanction for an amount of Rs 2,363.13 crore for providing cash support of Rs 1,000 along with Pongal gift for ration cards in the state. Similarly, a sum of Rs 346 crore for Kudimaramathu scheme was also given.

As part of long-term flood mitigation work, the State has sanctioned Rs 100 crore and the project will address flood prone areas in Tiruvallur, Chennai, Kancheepuram and Cuddalore districts. To assist the State Transport Corporation Department, a capital of Rs 206 crore will be sanctioned to procure 2,000 new buses, OPS said. The Deputy Chief Minister also detailed that the State was in the process of expanding the Coimbatore airport by acquiring land and that a sum of Rs 189 crore has been sanctioned to be paid as compensation to landowners for acquiring land essential for the extension of runway at theCoimbatore airport.
