According to police, two teachers Lakshmanan (38) and Chinnamuthu (34), both hailing from Harur and teaching History subject at the school near Mahendramangalam had sexually harassed the 15-year-old girl.
Students said that the two teachers would often come to the school under the influence of alcohol and habitually misbehaved with the girl. They also had sent obscene photos and posts to her cell phone.
The girl, however, did not reveal the harassment to anyone as she was threatened by the two teachers that they would fail her in their subject. On Thursday, both Lakshmanan and Chinnamuthu came drunk to the school and attempted to misbehave with the girl.
Unable to bear their torture, the girl informed her parents on reaching home midway from school. As the news of her harassment spread out, more than 100 villagers visited the school and questioned the two teachers. As they were found heavily drunk, the villagers took up the issue with headmaster Murugesan, who is visually challenged.
Yet not convinced, the irate villagers then thrashed the two teachers. On receiving information, the Mahendramangalam police rushed to thespot and took the two teachers into custody for questioning.
In a short while, the villagers gathered in front of the police station demanding stringent punishment for the teachers. They then left after the police held talks and promised action.
Dharmapuri District CEO Muthukrishnan said that departmental action would be initiated against the two teachers.
