The deceased victims have been identified as P. Maha Vishnu, a five-year-old boy, and his sister P. Agi Vidyashree, aged two-and-half years, residents of Pazhaya Colony, Navinipatti village, sources said. After learning about the incident, officials from the Departments of Revenue and Police inspected the spot.
According to Melur Inspector of Police Deiveega Pandian, the fateful incident occurred around 9 am, when the ill-fated children were playing beside the house.
While the children were playing close to the side portion of the mud-brick wall, which faces a pathway just outside, unfortunately the wall collapsed.
The wall was about 12-feet-high. It was an old house built over 25 years ago. Fire and Rescue Services personnel managed to rescue those children from under the debris, and with the aid of ‘108’ emergency service, the victims were taken to Melur Government Hospital, but they died on the way to hospital. The bodies were kept in the Government Hospital for a post-mortem. Based on a complaint lodged by Jeeva, mother of the deceased children, the Melur police have filed a case under Section 304 (ii) of the IPC, the inspector said.
