14 lakh apply for changes in voter rolls

With the first phase of local body polls to the rural local bodies are over, all eyes are now on the revision of photo electoral rolls as the dates for the urban bodies may be announced any time.

According to chief electoral officer Satybrata Sahoo more than 14 lakh have submitted various forms seeking inclusion and deletion in the voter rolls. There has been a good response to the ongoing special camps to ensure the enrolment of new voters and the revision process, the CEO said. 

As part of the national voters day awareness programme and to increase the electoral literacy among youngsters, the Tamil Nadu public election department has also planned a series of month-long awareness programmes targeting young voters.  As per the Election Commission direction, a series of awareness programme targeting youngsters has been planned till the end of January, the CEO informed.

According to official sources, political parties are now working overtime verifying the ongoing revision of voter rolls and the public election department have also reached out to the electorate seeking their active participation in the revision of voter rolls. The public election department has also planned a month-long awareness drive to boost electoral literacy through quiz programmes and street plays. 

Meanwhile a press release from the department said a cash prize of Rs 1 lakh would be awarded to winner of the election quiz programme. The mega quiz competition for school and college students will be held in Chennai at Kalaivanar Arangam on January 25 from noon to 5.30 pm, the release added. 

Students from class 9 to under-graduate level can participate in the quiz. Interested students can register by sending in their name, school name, class and mobile number to the email id: goalquiz@gmail.com. For more details, dial 9840927442, the release said adding that the last date registration is January 20. The subjects for the quiz are ‘Elections in India’ and general knowledge (50% each). Each school and college can send multiple teams, but each team can have only 2 students.

Earlier, Tamil Nadu State Election Commission conducted a video conference to discuss the delimitation exercise in nine districts where the local body polls are yet to be conducted.
