Amma Youth Sports Scheme to bring out rural talent launched

To boost sporting activities among youth in the state, Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami on Monday flagged off the Amma Youth Sports Scheme.

“Under the sports scheme, Amma Youth Sports Committee would be formed for men and women separately. The committee will decide to promote sports such as kabadi, volleyball, cricket, badminton or other sports and will develop required infrastructure,” said the Chief Minister after launching the scheme.

Palaniswami also said that the committee can decide to choose any three sports and with the available funds, infrastructure, such as sports equipment, ground and stadiums required for the sports and tournaments at the levels of panchayats, districts and state level would be established.  The scheme was announced by Chief Minister under Section 110 of Tamil Nadu Assembly Rules, on July 9, last year, to promote sports among youth mainly in rural areas. The government has allotted Rs 76.24 crore for the scheme to be implemented in all 12,524 gram panchayats and 528 panchayat unions. 

“It will help youth to develop leadership qualities and responsibility when playing as a team and to identify talents at the village level. The identified talents would be given special training and would be made to participate in various tournaments at higher levels,” the CM said.

The first tournament under the scheme was conducted in Kilai village near Sriperumbudur in Kancheepuram. 

Rs 6.6k cr projects cleared

In a meeting held at Secretariat permission was given for projects worth Rs 6,608 crore to provide jobs for 6,763 persons.  Nealry, 15 projects were discussed in the meeting. 

Palaniswami hands over Rs 1 crore solatium to slain SSI’s family 
Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami on Monday handed over a financial assistance of Rs 1 crore to the family of SSI Wilson, who was shot dead by two terror suspects in Kanniyakumari district last week. In line with the announcement made by him on last Friday, the Chief Minister handed over a cheque to slain SSI’s wife at the Secretariat and consoled them. Palaniswami said taking into account the supreme sacrifice made by the SSI announced a compensation of Rs 1 crore to be paid to his family. He also said that government job would be given to one of the family members on compassionate grounds based on their qualifications. The SSI has left behind his wife and two daughters.
