According to sources, the party functionary, Moorthi (52), who was also a realtor and former council member of Kalamavur panchayat, was at a tea stall at Kalamavur bus stand around 7.30 am on Wednesday when suddenly, a nine-member gang on three bikes attacked him with weapons and fled the spot. Moorthi, who sustained severe injuries, died on the spot.

On information, Pudukkottai SP Arun Sakthikumar and DSP Francis along with the Keeranur police rushed to the spot and sent the body to the Pudukkottai medical college for post-mortem.

Meanwhile, Moorthi’s relatives assembled on the Tiruchy-Pudukkottai highway and disrupted traffic over his death.

The police rushed to the spot and pacified the crowd. A case has been registered.

It may be recalled that Veerasamy (50) from Viralimalai in Pudukkottai had lent a few lakh rupees to Moorthi. As Moorthi had not returned the money, Veerasamy insisted the former to settle the money at once. On February 6, 2016, Moorthi, under the pretext of handing over the borrowed money, invited Veerasamy upon which the latter along with his son and relatives went to meet him.

There, Moorthi’s gang reportedly attacked him and left him and his son dead.

Later, Moorthi was arrested and was recently outon bail.
