Orientation programme for all polytechnic students soon

In its maiden attempt, Tamil Nadu Department of Technical Education (DOTE) has decided to conduct orientation programme for fresh polytechnic students on their course and career prospects.

The orientation programme includes creating awareness among students about job opportunities in connection with their courses and personality development and improving communication skills.


A senior official from DOTE told DT Next that the orientation programme, which would be a part of the curriculum, would be introduced not only in government polytechnic colleges but also private institutions. “During the programme the students will be taught about the fundamentals of all subjects and particularly the fundamentals of science,” he added.


Stating that special faculties would impart knowledge about interview techniques and self-discipline, the official said the programme would also explain on the examination system to the students.


“Other topics such as transition from school to college, student’s behaviour in the campus and encouraging cultural activities,” he said adding that tips to improve one’s communication skills, creating awareness about the importance of English and motivating students’ to achieve their goals would also be given to the students during the session that would be conducted every month.


The official said that for each of the activities a faculty member would be given the responsibility for organising, conduct and monitoring the programme. “In each session of the programme, faculty mentors and student guides will also attend the programme,” he said.


The official pointed out that the programme is being designed by the experts in the Higher Education Department, retired professors and experts from All India Council for Technical Education.


At present, there are 520 polytechnic colleges including 41 government institutions and 34 government aided colleges across the State catering to about 1.04 lakh students every year.
