Farmers VK Rajan (62) and S Nallusamy (56), both long-time friends and hailing from Vavikattu Valasu in Kaspapet panchayat, handed over the deed document to the District Collector for public utility.

It has been a long-time demand of the villagers to have a crematorium in their locality. Due to lack of a crematorium, the villagers were forced to cremate in public place, which created many problems. Also, in the absence of a solid waste management facility, the collected garbage was dumped along the water bodies triggering health concerns among the people.

“There was no solution at sight despite taking these issues multiple times with the village panchayat officials. Finally, we sought the help of the two farmers, who too readily agreed to give away their 79 cents of land for the public purpose. Rajan and Nallusamy had registered their land, worth about several lakhs, to be given as donation,” claimed the villagers.

Rajan said that they bought about four acres of land in the locality in 1995. “We sold most of the land and left with only 79 cents. When the villagers approached us, we decided to give the land for free and gave the deed document to the district administration,” he said.

The two farmers urged the administration to take 45 cents of land for setting up a solid waste management facility and the remaining to develop a crematorium with road, water, light and cremation facilities for the benefit of the villagers.
