Ramadoss hails govt stand urging Purohit for early, favourable decision

Hailing the Centre’s reversal of stand on the release of seven life convicts in the former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi assassination case, PMK founder Dr S Ramadoss on Friday urged Tamil Nadu Governor Banwarilal Purohit to order their release under Article 161 of the Constitution in line with the recommendations of the State Cabinet resolution of September 2018.

In a statement here, he welcomed the Centre’s submission before the Madras High Court that the Governor has a free hand in deciding on the release of the convicts.

Reacting to Centre’s submission, Dr Ramadoss said during the earlier hearing on January 8, the Centre had informed the High Court that its stand was that the convicts should not be released. ‘’But today, the Centre has changed its stand and said that the Governor can unilaterally take a decision on their release,’’ he said and termed it as a big victory on the matter.

It was a double victory--one the Centre has reversed its stand and the other was that the Raj Bhavan could no longer delay in finalising its decision on the release of the convicts, who had been languishing in jail for the last 29 years, he said.

Stating that 516 days had passed since the State Cabinet resolved and recommended to the Governor on their release, he said, the Governor could no longer justify the delay in taking a decision and urged him to order their release without any further delay.
