On Monday, Manikandan (48) from Srirangam tried to immolate despite heavy police security. However, the police present on the premises overpowered him and later whisked him away and pacified him. Upon inquiry it was learnt that the family of Manikandan has been owning a piece of land which is their ancestral property but his father reportedly denied him the share and so he came to the District Collectorate and attempted to commit suicide.

Meanwhile, eyebrows raised how Maikandan managed to carry a can of kerosene into the Collectorate even after a thorough checking by the police in all the entry points. The social activists charge that it was due to the lethargic attitude of the police who freely allow the petitioner along with the kerosene.

The activists pointed out that previously, the District Collector had issued a stringent warning against those who attempt self-immolation and even arrest of such petitioner assuming that it was some handiwork of miscreants who wanted to disrepute to theDistrict Collector.

“These petitioners think that such suicide attempts would draw the attention of the officials especially the District Collector. Actually, any sort of protests and suicide attempts inside the collectorate premises is an offense and they are liable to undergo imprisonment even,” said an activist Neelakannan.

Neelakannan appealed to the District Collector to issue strong warning against these kind of petitioners.
