Riviera 2020 to have 52 new events, 40,000 to participate

A total of 40,000 participants from India and 39 countries are expected to participate in VIT university’s cultural and sports extravaganza ‘Riviera 2020’ which kicks off on Wednesday, University Chancellor G Viswanathan said at a press meet on Monday.

Talking to the media, he said that the 152 event celebrations would include 52 new events in addition to special events for the differently abled. The event will see 33,708 participants within the country while 2,920 participants will be from other countries. So far, 120 students and 23 faculty members from 39 countries have registered, he added. Another 3,500 were expected to opt for spot registrations when the festival opens, he said. Stating that the winner gets to take home Rs 15 lakh as prize money, he said the university’s organisers had succeeded in ensuring participation of students from 258 institutions in India. A society related event planned a mini marathon, he added.


The festival would see ten promotional events, and 13 pre Riviera events, which commenced from February 1, Viswanathan said. Sports events would include 12 for men and 7 for women.


Speaking about the chief guests, Viswanathan said, “For the inaugural, the chief guest will be 1995 Arjuna awardee P Ganeshan while cricketer Harbhajan Singh would do the honours at the valediction.” Those present at the meet included vice president Sankar Viswanathan and assistant VP SKadambari Viswanathan.
