The pooja witnessed the presence of Commercial Taxes Minister KC Veeramani, Collector A Shanmuga Sundaram, Corporation Commissioner K Krishnamurthy, MLA G Loganathan, former Minister VS Vijay and AIADMK treasurer M Moorthy.

Interacting with the media, Veeramani said the facility holding up a large space was conceived by keeping the population count till 2050.

He added that the new bus stand will be constructed at an estimated cost of Rs 46.51 crore and will have 84 bus bays instead 60, which it currently holds. Funds for the work would be allocated in the forthcoming Budget and the work would be completed in six months.

Calling on the Collector and Corporation Commissioner to undertake frequent checks to ensure expeditious work, Veeramani said orders would be issued to set up temporary bus stands at various locations to ensure that passengers are not put to inconvenience.

Officials said that while Arni, Tiruvannamalai and Chittoor bound buses would be based in the old bus stand, buses bound for Chennai, Kancheepuram, Ambur, Tirupattur and Bengaluru would be in the new bus stand.

The proposed facility will also have 59 shops, parking facilities for nearly 96 two-wheelers and 15 four-wheelers and 8 parking bays for town buses.
