The residents of a village, 30 km from here, had kept the noose to trap pigs that stray into the farm and destroy the crops. However, instead of pigs it was a tiger that got caught in it.
Shocked after seeing the big cat in their trap, which was trying to free itself from the noose, the villagers immediately alerted the Forest department officials, sources said.
Following the alert, veterinarians from Mudumalai Tiger Reserve and Forest officials rushed to the spot, department sources said. Though the veterinarians shot two darts to tranquilise and rescue the tiger, both missed the target, they said.
Even before another dart could be shot, the tiger managed to free itself from the noose and ran towards a nearby estate, the sources said.
