Go soft on CAA protesters, EPS tells police
Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami, on Sunday, held a meeting with the top brass of the police department regarding the ongoing protests against Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA).

Sources privy to the meeting said Palaniswami directed the Director General of Police (DGP) JK Tripathy to go soft on the protesters and to diffuse the current tension prevailing in the State. City Commissioner AK Viswanathan was also given similar instructions to depute officials who can handlethe situation. After the alleged police excess on Friday, the stir spread across TN following which there were accusations that law and order in the State had been disturbed. In the meeting, EPS directed the IG (Intelligence) KN Sathyamurthy to ensure he gets correct inputs on the protests.
Chief Secretary K Shanmugam, who was also present, also discussed the current protests with the DGP and directedhim to ensure law and order situation does not slip out of their hands. Later in the day, Social Democratic Party of India leaders met Palaniswai at his residence to discuss the ongoing protests and demanded the cases against protestersbe withdrawn.
Spl teams to monitor protests in State
The Tamil Nadu DGP has assigned additional responsibilities to 12 police officers, including three ADGPs, to monitor law and order situation in Southern Tamil Nadu after the spur in anti-CAA protests.
DGP JK Tripathy had asked six officers to take immediate stock of situation and put adequate precautionary measures in place to avert any untoward incidents.
Abhay Kumar Singh, ADGP, Idol Wing, will supervise Madurai city and range, while Mahesh Kumar Aggarwal, ADGP, Operation, is in charge of Tirunelveli city and range. Shailesh Kumar Yadav, ADGP, Social Justice and Human Rights, is officer-in-charge of Centre zone. S Murugan, IG, EOW, will be at Tirunelveli range, G Stalin SP, CS-CID, at Ottanchathiram and Palani areas in Dindigul. MC Sarangan, IG, Training, will be at Thanjavaur range. V Baskaran, Commandant, 13th battalion, will supervise Cumbum and Bodi in Theni while P Mahendran, Commandant 5th battalion will supervise Kayalpatinam in Thoothukudi.
R Ramakrishnan, SP, is at Tiruvarur while T Senthil Kumar, SP, is in Thanjavur district and S Slevaraj, SP, has been given Pudukkottai district.
