Indian Makkal Mandram represented by its president Varaaki on citing the ongoing protests regards the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), which led to a police lathi-charge at Washermanpet owing to the alleged unruly behaviour of protestors submitted that the protestors, including children and women resort to impromptu road blockades resulting in traffic jams causing severe inconvenience to the public at large.

Under such circumstances, offering police protection to hold siege to the Tamil Nadu Assembly by Islamic and political groups, would result in causing severing inconvenience to the public and hence sought to ban the proposed protest on February 19.

On moving the plea, the petitioner’s counsel on Monday made a mention before the first bench comprising Chief Justice AP Sahi and Justice Subramonium Prasad seeking for an urgent hearing.

But the bench refused to direct early hearing and instead held that the plea on being numbered will be put forth before the bench vested with the portfolio to hear the case. Based on this, the plea is expected to be taken up for hearing soon.

It may be noted that the same outfit had moved a plea a week ago seeking to prohibit students from resorting to anti-CAA protests and dharnas inside schools, colleges and universities.

The bench comprising Justice M Sathyanarayanan and Justice R Hemalatha before whom the plea came ordered notice to the Centre and state governments.
