2,500 booked for CAA stir sans nod in Tiruchy

Police here on Thursday filed a case against around 2,500 members of various Muslim organisations that took out a march against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and the National Register of Citizens (NRC) in front of the Collectorate on Wednesday.

According to the police, despite the police denying permission to organise a huge protest, the members from various Muslim organisations staged a protest.


They assembled near the District Collectorate, raised slogans against the State and Central governments against the CAA. Those who addressed the rally, asked the state government to pass a resolution on theAssembly floor.


When a section of the protesters attempted to besiege the Collectorate, they were stopped and asked to withdraw the protest. Since they refused to disperse, the Sessions Court police registered a case against over2, 00 members.


The police said that they were booked under various IPC sections. A case is being registered against the crowd under relevant provisions of law.


Similarly, a case has been registered against 1,000 persons, including Hyder Ali, general secretary of the TMMK, for staging a sit-in at Uzhavar sandhai without permission.


Based on the complaint by Tennur VAO Senthil Kumar, a case has been registered under various sections, including unlawful assembly.

A Muslim couple got married at the protest venue, where more than 1,000 people had gathered in protest against the Citizenship Amendment Act, proposed National Register of Citizens and National Population Register here on Thursday.


The couple, S Abdul Kalam, 24, a vegetable trader and K Reshma entered into the wedlock under a canopy erected at the protest venue at Aathupalam. The protesters have begun a ‘Shaheen Bagh’ like protest since Wednesday night against thecontroversial law.


The couple’s marriage was solemnised with them holding an anti-CAA placard. The marriage was solemnised by an Imam, with the bride Reshma and groom Abdul Kalam exchanging vows amid slogans against the new law.  They were blessed by family members and thousands of protesters at the venue.


The couple also vowed to fight until the CAA is repealed by the Centre. “We feel happy to get married amid such a huge crowd.”

The protest against the CAA, NRC and NPR continued for the seventh day at Washermenpet on Thursday as thousands of women, men and children thronged the venue demanding the Centre to listen to their pleas. More than 5,000 people, who participated in the protest demanded to meet the Tamil Nadu CM. They claimed that they would protest until the amendment was rejected. CPM leader Brinda Karat, who joined the women at the protest, said that people have voted for them for not to divide the nation and give trouble for minorities and Dalits. She also pointed that throughout the world there was support for women in Shaheen Bagh protest, but only the Modi government criticised and used abusive language. She said that she has been with women’s movements for the past four decades and that women here in Chennai proved that they are courageous and bold that they have stood for themselves.
