Addressing the valedictory function of the NSS camp organised by the University at Kaniyambadi, 12 kilometres from Vellore, on the Tiruvannamalai Highway, he instructed rural girls not tostop their studies after completing school but to continue with higher education.
Handing over laptops and other education aids at the function, he said awareness of new technologies in farming had to be created for farmers so that they could thrive well.
Stating that only 23 per cent of farmers have knowledge of drip irrigation, he said if more farmers were aware of this method, the areas under crops would increase. If all local irrigation tanks and ponds were desilted, it would be enough to recharge the ground water in the area during rain, he added.
Professor Mohana Srinivasan welcomed the gathering, NSS coordinator Jayakrishnan participated in the event and professor Gayathri proposed a vote of thanks. DMK MLAs AP Nandakumar (Anaicut) and JL Eswarappan (Arcot) were also present at the valedictory function. .
