It may be noted that the students were on strike for the past 20 days demanding the revocation of hiked tuition fee, restoration of free transportation for the students and provision of 25 percent reservation for local students in all courses. They were agitating at the administrative block. In view of the visit of Vice President, para-military forces were deployed inside the university campus and for security reasons, 65 agitating students were removed from the administrative block and taken to another area in the campus.
Hearing the news, another 150 students resumed agitation in the administrative block and they were also removed and taken to another area late last evening. As Naidu left the university premises after attending the Convocation, all of them were released and they resumed their agitation at the administrative block. Meanwhile, the PU clarified that the students were removed from the administrative block due to tightening of security on the eve of Vice President’s visit and no students were arrested or detained by the police.
According to a university release, the students were taken to UMISARC building of Pondicherry University and all the necessary arrangements were made for them, including food and other amenities.
