The Lt Governor in a WhatsApp post said the visit to the village adjacent to Auroville led to the formation of a women’s leadership group. All seven presidents of 90 self-help groups have been brought together as one federation to work in unison with the male panchayat head of Alankuppam, she said.

There are many unaddressed challenges in the village like clogged water channels due to which three large lakes are running dry, Bedi said. A restroom is also required during temple festivals besides a place to dump garbage, she added.

A coalition group of these seven presidents and the male panchayat head was formed to meet on every first Sunday of the month to resolve issues, Bedi said, adding the first meeting to be scheduled on March 1.

The Junior Engineer of the Municipality shall be a key coordinator while raising volunteers within the community, Bedi said.

A WhatsApp network was also established with links to Special Commissioner Sunderesan and the Grievance Officer, Bedi added.
