Around 1am, a petrol bomb was thrown into the mosque premises. However, it did not go off. Some men, who were sleeping inside, rushed out and found shattered glass pieces of a beer bottle with a wick and petrol spilled all over the floor.
On receiving information, the Saravanampatty police rushed to the spot and are probing to know if the petrol bomb was hurled in retaliation for the attack on a Hindu Munnani functionary or for other reasons.
As the news of attack spread, the members of various Muslim organisations gathered at the place of worship. Meanwhile, representatives of Coimbatore North District All Jamat Federation, led by its organiser Abdul Ajeez, petitioned City Police Commissioner Sumit Sharan, seeking speedy investigation to bring the culprits to book.
“No one was injured in the attack. Still, the cops should take preventive steps to avoid any such similar incidents. All mosques should be given police protection,” they said.
Following the incident, armed police have been deployed in both the mosques and temples to prevent any untoward incidents. Special teams of police are on the lookout for the culprits.
