The protestors led by Balakrishnan tried to go on a rally from Parry’s Corner to the Secretariat when the police detained them. All werereleased later. “We have been protesting urging the state government to oppose the CAA and not to implement the NRC and the NPR in the state. We along with the Secular Progressive Alliance parties and Muslim groups have been protesting for the last two months. But Edappadi K Palansiwami’s government is refusing to adopt the resolution against the CAA-NRC-NPR. Hence, we are forced to knock the door of the state Assembly through this protest,” he told the protesters.
Balakrishnan pointed out that Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Odisha and Puducherry have already announced that they would not implement the NRC and the NPR. “Kerala government not only adopted a resolution against it in the Assembly, but it moved the Supreme Court against theAct,” he noted.
Stating that implementation of the NPR is nothing but putting noose around poor people, including the tribals, he demanded the state government to adopt a resolution seeking repeal of the amendment brought into the Citizenship Act and not to implement the NPR-NRC. “If the state government refused to adopt the resolution, the state will witness major protest against it,”he warned.
