CM: Rs 150 cr to boost infra in TN edu institutions

Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami on Friday announced an infrastructure boost for educational institutions at a cost of Rs 150 crore. He also emphasised that premier universities like Anna University, Madurai Kamaraj University and Bharathidasan University will get a total grant of Rs 210 crore for research projects.

Making a suo motto announcement in the Assembly under Rule 110, the Chief Minister said that the annual maintenance cost for the existing government schools is around Rs 38 crore and this amount would now be escalated to Rs 100 crore in the upcoming fiscal 2020-21.


To ensure safety and security measures in 4,282 government schools, the state would install CCTV cameras at a cost of Rs 48 crore.


The Chief Minister also said that the state would spend close to Rs 90 crore to open new primary schools and upgrade middle and high schools in the state. In the current year, the state will open 25 primary schools at a cost of Rs 5.72 crore.


To improve the physical activity and encourage sports, the state will inaugurate a new open stadium in Tiruppur at a cost of Rs 18 crore. The Sports and Youth Welfare Department will also establish indoor facilities at Chennai Nehru Stadium for taekwondo, judo, fencing and bridge at a cost of Rs 12.50 crore, the Chief Minister said, a day after School Education Minister KA Sengottaiyan moved the grants for his School Education and Youth Welfare Departmenton Thursday.
