Crude bomb hurled at DMK ex-MLA’s house in Madurai

Unidentified persons hurled a crude bomb at the residence of former DMK MLA Velusamy here on Monday. The incident occurred on East Cross Street at Anna Nagar in the afternoon, sources said.

After learning about the incident, Commissioner of Police, Madurai City, S Davidson Devasirvatham, inspected the spot and held inquiries. On hearing the explosive sound, Velusamy (72) got out of his house and noticed some smoke coming out close to the entrance of his house.


Besides, battery, wire and chemical substances were also found in front of his house. Preliminary inquiries revealed that two men were suspected to be behind the incident.


The police gathered CCTV footage that showed two men wearing T-shirts moving in a motorbike on the spot. One of the duo threw something at the house and sped away and the bomb was detonated by remote control.


Anna Nagar police and personnel from Bomb Detection and Disposal squad examined the scene of crime.


Some years ago, the former MLA’s son was murdered. Hence, previous enmity is suspected to be behind the incident, but the exact cause would be known only when the accused were nabbed.


The police personnel after inspecting collected a 12 volt battery, wire, chemical substance and broken plastics spread on the spot. Moreover, sniffer dog was also pressed into service as part of investigation. Anna Nagar police have filed a case based on complaint and investigating, the sources said.
