The State’s peak power demand on March 19 touched 15,664 MW as against 15,295 MW recorded a week before on March 12 after the State government announced measures to contain the outbreak. TN has ordered the closure of the malls, cinemas, amusement parks and big shops and directed companies to provide work from home option for employees.
A senior Tangedco official said the demand has increased over the last couple of weeks hovering over 15,500 MW. “The daily energy consumption has been crossing 340 million units,” the official said.
“After the closure of educational institutions and IT companies asking its employees to work from home, the State has been witnessing sustained demand of 14,500-15,000 during the day time,” added the official.
He added that the sustained demand was largely because of the increased usage of the air conditioners at home. “Many people are using the air conditioners during the daytime. Considering the closure of the educational institutions and provision of the work from home, the decrease in demand from these establishment is being compensated by the increased demand from the domestic consumption,” the official said.
