136 temples in Vellore region shut
The Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments (HR and CE) Department has announced the closure of 136 temples in the Vellore region, comprising Chengalpattu, Kancheepuram, Tiruvallur, Vellore, Ranipet and Tirupattur districts in a bid to avoid crowding, official sources revealed.

While there are a total of 541 temples under the HR & CE control in the region, the 136 denoted temples, include Vallimalai Murugan Temple, Rathnagiri Murugan Temple and the Selliamman Temple near the new bus stand all in and around Vellore town.
These temples were chosen as they attract sizeable crowd, officials said and added that the move was a bid to avoid coronavirus infection and to ensure social distancing.
Meanwhile, the police arrested 54 tipplers, who purchased liquor from Tasmac outlets and sold them for high rates on Sunday. As Sunday was a holiday, tipplers purchased liquor on Saturday and sold them to others at high rates. When this came to the notice of the police, they swung into action and arrested 54 who are all from Vellore.
