SP lands at doorstep with groceries after diffabled man seeks help over SMS

When the countrywide total shutdown was announced unexpectedly, Radhakrishnan, a differently abled man from Agaram Sithamoor village in Villupuram who earned a living by working at a firm in Chennai as a typist for a paltry sum, found himself and family in deep trouble. The family of six had just enough money and groceries to survive for a little over a week.

Radhakrishnan’s both legs and one hand are paralysed, but he used one hand to type. But after lockdown began, he faced financial trouble and could not get out to buy anything. Their fears came true when they ran out of materials, forcing Radhakrishnan, his wife, their three children and his mother-in-law to go hungry for three days.

Finally, after finding no way out, he sent an SOS to Villupuram district Superintendent of Police S Jayakumar on Tuesday morning. “I am stuck at home because of (Section) 144 and not being able to step out. There is no rice or groceries at home. Please help,” he said in the message.

“People had been sending messages seeking help to get groceries and other items because of the lockdown. But this was the first time I got a text saying that they had not cooked and eaten anything for three days,” said SP Jayakumar.

Moved by their plight, the officer purchased a bag of essentials, including rice and groceries, and personally visited them to hand it over to Radhakrishnan and family along with some cash on Tuesday. During the interaction with them, he realised that the family was struggling without a proper meal for three days, added Jayakumar.

The SP added that his officials have been extending a helping hand to orphanages and shelter homes in

their jurisdiction, helping them get their groceries and other essential items by coordinating with traders and sponsors so as to overcome the accessibility and also rise in prices due to the shutdown
