Residents claim that tahsildar Murugan has been acting like this for over a week, but the situation reached a peak when he slapped a village assistant on the town’s busy bazaar street for not ensuring that the battery of his vehicle-mounted PA system was in order.

As the battery ran out of power, an angry Murugan slapped the village assistant on the road in front of spectators reducing him to tears. This resulted in the seven VAOs and 11 village assistants, who were present, leaving Murugan and undertaking bandobust work with regional deputy tahsildars in other areas.

Immediately after the above incident, a 55-year-old man and a 14-year-old girl accompanying him to buy provisions were stopped by Murugan, who demanded to know where they were going and without giving him a chance to answer beat him on the shoulders and body with a cane resulting in the old man swooning while the shocked child stood by in tears.

Locals then rushed to his aid, and revived him by giving him water, eye-witnesses said.

Asked about this, Pernambut Consumer Protection and Welfare Association president T Basheeruddin said, “I received reports that the volunteers were beating people  with sticks, but I did not hear about the tahsildar doing so as I have not stepped out of the house.”

Local businessman Abdul Hameed said “the volunteers include those from political parties who are now using this opportunity to settle personal scores.”

Town Congress Committee president G Suresh Kumar said “a couple of days ago Murugan took away the keys of the local CPI office when the town secretary Chakravarthy opened the office to get some cash.

Though he revealed his identity and the reason for opening the office, he was soundly abused and the office key taken away.”

Social activist K Akbar Basha, in a complaint to the Collector, stated that Murugan attacked him for videographing his antics on his mobile.
