Class C, D employees in a fix over reaching workspots

With the State government mulling opening of government offices with minimum staff, Class C and D employees are a worried lot for they mostly rely on public transportation. Officials, however, said they have to wait for the expert committee recommendations to clear the ambiguity over the relaxation norms.

Government offices with 33 per cent capacity would be functioning from Monday. Sub-Registrar Office (SRO), one of the leading revenue-generating departments, is yet to be sanitised.

Also, no planning has been made to arrange vehicles for transporting the staff. Officials, whom DT Next spoke to, said they got circular to open offices across the State, following the standard operating procedures. But the government is yet to provide thermal scanners or sanitise the offices.

“We got a circular to open SRO offices, but there is no clarity. We have no idea about transportation for the employees. My staff are from Kanchipuram and other districts. Regarding the standard operating procedure, we didn’t get any thermal scanners and offices are yet to be sanitised,” said a Sub-Registrar who works in outskirts of the city.

The official said some registrars in districts like Dindigul and Karur have openly defied the government order and said they can’t open the offices till May 3. Citing Section 144 imposed by the Centre, the employees said they have decided not to work during the period.

Sources in the registration department said, “If an employee lives in Anna Nagar and works in Chengalpet SRO, he could work from his area office. Regarding the thermal scanner, the official concerned can buy the tools under miscellaneous expenses.” Tamil Nadu Sub Registrars’ Association on Sunday discussed the way ahead since a large number of people would come to the office. “We are planning to send a representation to the government to put forth the difficulties,” said an association member
