Crowds in Tirupur, Salem as curb ends

People hit roads and thronged shops violating social distancing norms on Wednesday as complete lockdown came to an end in Tirupur and Salem Corporation limits.

Major arterial roads including Kumaran Road in Tirupur witnessed heavy movement of vehicles since morning. People also thronged shops and markets to stock up on essentials after a three-day complete lockdown ended on Tuesday.

Till noon, the Tirupur police registered as many as 242 cases of violations and seized 20 cars and 120 two-wheelers.

Similarly, roads in Salem district, which wore a deserted look for the last three days, witnessed large movement of people on Wednesday. People flocked to the temporary vegetable markets in new bus stand, old bus stand, Ammapet and Asthampatti areas from early morning without following social distancing norms.

Despite instructions from both police and civic body authorities to maintain social distancing, the people were in no mood to heed to their advice.
