People in blatant violation continued to crowd various business spots without masks and safety gears throwing social distancing concept to the wind. This insensitivity has led to fears among officials of rapid spread of COVID-19 infection in the coming days.

While Collector S Sivarasu was busy in visiting rural areas of the district to enforce the lockdown restrictions, people in urban parts were moving about as though the pandemic did not exist.

The warning of the Collector of the Koyambedu market experience where people gathered without following any safety norms fell on deaf ears as people started moving freely in market places, including NSB Road, Gandhi Market and Big Bazaar areas on Tuesday.

“This will certainly end up in disaster. People fail to learn from Koyembedu turning hotspot. Tiruchy should not become another hotspot and the district administration should initiate severe action,” said N Senthilvel, a social activist.

It may be noted that the Collector visited the home quarantined persons at Thottiyam, who returned from Koyembedu market recently.
