The Commission had on May 1 made amendments in the academic calendar for the new session since several schools were yet to complete all the formalities, including the correction of answer sheets for Class 12 students. Accordingly, the UGC had declared that the new college admissions will start from August 1 instead of July 1 this new academic year.

A senior official from the Directorate of School Education told DT Next on Thursday that in line with the Centre’s announcement, Class 12 students should have to be ready for admissions by keeping all relevant documents, including mark sheets well before the admission date.

“Therefore, taking into consideration how vital Class 12 board exams are for the students who are planning to join higher education, the authorities have recommended that the evaluation of answer sheets should start immediately after May 17,” he added.

Pointing out that more than eight lakh Class 12 students had appeared for the board exams this year, more than 50 lakh answer sheets, which were kept in safe rooms, have to be evaluated by involving over 25 thousand teachers, who were already shortlisted.

“Transporting of the answer sheets from respective zones to the main evaluation camp will take just two days,” he said adding, “even if the evaluation work starts after May 20, the whole process will take just about ten days to complete.”

Stating that once the evaluation is completed for a particular subject, the answer scripts would be immediately scanned and uploaded in the system on the same day, he said, after completion of evaluation works, the CD containing the answer sheet data would be handed over to the head of the Directorate of Examinations.

“The results will be published in a day or two once the verification of answer sheet data was done by the authorities of the directorate,” he said.

The official also said that for transparency, this year, CCTV cameras would be installed at evaluation centres, which would be monitored by the officials at the headquarters in Chennai.
