According to the GO, 8.39 lakh labourers registered with 14 different welfare boards of various unorganised sectors would be given Rs 1,000 each. Rs 83.9 crore had been allotted for the purpose.
After the first lockdown was announced, towards the end of March, the State government had distributed Rs 1,000 for every household possessing ration cards and followed by that Rs 1,000 was distributed to labourers of various unorganised sectors registered with their respective welfare boards, in the second week of April. However, as the lockdown was extended for the third consecutive period, labourers who had lost their livelihood due to lockdown had urged the state government to distribute another round of Rs 1,000 for their survival.
Taking into account of their demands, the state government announced Rs 1,000 for the labourers. Out of the 8.39 lakh beneficiaries, more than 50 percentage are fishermen who constitute around 4.85 lakh. Some of the marginalised sections of the society such as transgenders, ‘narikuravars’, tribals, scavengers, ‘pudhirai vannans’ and so are also covered under the GO.
