Taking advantage of the minimum functioning of the government offices and the Police Department concentrating on the social distancing and strict implementation of the lockdown norms, some people took advantage of organising minor marriages in the district.
Usually, minor marriages take place in more number during the months of March, April and May when the schools are closed for the annual vacation. And the officials used to keep a vigil on these weddings and prevent them. This year, despite the lockdown, the Child Line Number 1098 received 10 calls between March 24 and April 14 and the officials took a swift action and stopped all the marriages in the district.
“We were informed about the calls and soon, we had swung into action and we could stop the weddings despite all odds,” said District Social Welfare Officer A Thamimunisha.
According to the official, the minor marriages were organised in rural areas in the district and they had stopped two each from Musiri and Vaiyyampatti and one each from the rural areas like Mannachanallur, Manapprai, Marungapuri and Tennur in the urban area.
Since the lockdown paved the way for solemnising weddings in the houses with only close family members, the minor marriage organisers had the advantage of arranging these marriages. Still, we could get calls on the toll free number 1098.
“The Child Line number is open round-the-clock and the victims or their well-wishers can call us at any time to save the child brides,” said Muralikumar, Child Line coordinator.
